Episode 17: Safe Browsing Habits
Episode Air Date: June 12, 2009
Episode Summary
Today we've got 5 simple steps you can take to ensure your PC remains protected while you surf the Web. Following these five guides can help protect your PC from viruses, spyware and other online threats.
5 Safe Browsing Habits
Today's content, in part, is courtesy of easy computer tips.
-
Keep Windows Up-to-date
There's really not a reason you shouldn't be doing this. Windows Update, or Microsoft Update (what's this?) comes with the Windows OS and is designed to download and install important updates for your computer's microsoft products. This includes important security patches that fix and enhance your computer's security.
-
Install a Firewall
A firewall allows you to control what programs can connect to the internet, and what programs cannot. Most firewall software have built-in protection that blocks access to your computer from intruders. Now, newer versions of Windows (XP SP2 and later) have the built-in Windows Firewall (what's this?)—but it is a very basic firewall and most people aren't comfortable with the low levels of protection that it offers. Alternatively, TechDish recommends ZoneAlarm for beginner to intermediate users. More advanced users should look to Comodo Firewall.
-
Run Regular Virus Scans
…and it helps that your AntiVirus software has up-to-date virus definitions! TechDish Recommends running a basic virus scan daily, and a full system virus scan at least once a week. For more information about antivirus software, check out Episode #3: Viruses Overview for full details on antivirus software and scanning techniques.
-
Remove Spyware
Most antivirus tools will have at least a basic protection against spyware and malware. Spyware is software that runs in the background on your computer, without your knowledge. It usually tracks your browsing habits and program use…but some malware will track keystrokes and other private information—allowing someone else access to your personal and private accounts and information.
-
Use a Web-Safe Browser
Internet browsers are regularily updated for two reasons: user experience enhancements and security fixes. If you are using an older browser (eg. Firefox 1 or 2, Internet Explorer 6 and below), you are putting yourself at risk for problems. The latest versions of each browser are strongly recommended, and Microsoft's latest offering, Internet Explorer 8 (get it FREE) is very fast and very secure. Alternatively, you might want to check out Mozilla Firefox (get it FREE) or Apple's Safari (get it FREE).
